What do Julianne Moore, Naomi Watts and Rachel Weisz have in common? They get their glowing complexions from Joanna Vargas. An amazing New York-based celebrity facialist, she is the founder of Joanna Vargas Salon and Skincare Collection and she’s earned a loyal fan base with her signature Triple Crown Facial. I was lucky enough to receive a facial from Joanna a few years ago when she was visiting Los Angeles (her client base brings to her LA regularly) and it was amazing. I’ve been a devotée ever since.
Joanna recently launched a natural skincare collection that has worked wonders on my skin. Now that summer has come to an end (well, not in LA), it’s time to work on getting our skin back in shape. We asked Joanna for her tips and advice on dealing with the damage caused by all that frolicking in the sun.
Joanna’s Tips for Sun-Damaged Skin:
- Antioxidants protect the skin against sun damage and they preserve your elasticity. Without them your skin will age very fast!
- Green tea is a great antioxidant. It calms inflammation and protects the skin against sun damage and other stressors that cause premature aging. It also helps purge the skin of toxins, giving you a nice glow.
- Olive oil is fantastic for reversing sun damage and softening skin that has taken years of abuse under the sun. I have a client who was a professional tennis player and her skin has transformed as a result of using olive oil in her routine. The polyphenols in olives make this the best anti-mutagen ingredient. [A mutagen is a physical or chemical agent that can alter genetic material; many mutagens are also carcinogens.]
- I love the mineral powder SPFs on the market right now. They are SPF30 to provide protection from sun damage, and they’re great over makeup. I also love that they are easy to reapply throughout the day and they help eliminate shine on the skin when the weather is hot and humid. If you are out shopping and walking around all day, you should reapply, dusting more on every few hours. However, in a normal workday this wouldn’t be necessary.
For sun damaged, sunburned or dry/sensitive skin:
3 tbsp aloe vera juice
1 tbsp aloe vera gel
2 drops rose oil
Apply with cotton ball to damaged area or all over the face.
I love my Vitamin C Face Wash. It contains vitamin C for elasticity and to fight sun damage, salcylic acid for cleansing and exfoliating, hyaluronic acid for hydrating and galactoarabinan for cell turnover.
What treatments do you recommend?
I would recommend my LED Light Bed to correct sun damage. LED light therapy is a proven technology to build collagen and correct damage at the surface of the skin. It reduces inflammation, sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles. I recommend that people do one session a week when they start out, for six weeks.
I also do a great exfoliation that helps remove sun damage and stimulate collagen production. I also do oxygen, which heals the skin.
