What happens when two slightly intimidated girls walk through the doors of the all-women Pink Iron Gym? Amazing things! Pink Kale’s very own Head Lady in Charge Dawn Shand Johnson and I wanted to check out their Pink Fit Team Training Class. I have always been intrigued by the fact that this is a gym for women, by women. But make no mistake, this ain’t no Curves. These girls are serious about their workouts which I always appreciate because well, so am I. But what I found at Pink Iron is something that has eluded the MANY, MANY other gyms and classes I have been to. This is a sisterhood in every way imaginable. They work out together, compete together, and seem to spend a lot of time together. So how did Dawn and I, the two slightly intimidated, a little nervous newbies fit in? Seamlessly.
Right off the bat we were shown around by Holly. The gym is adorable. I hesitate to use this word because it is a misrepresentation of what gets accomplished within these walls. But it is. Pink weights. Pink inspirational saying boldly printed on the walls. I mean, it is called Pink Iron after all.
Time for class. It is a crossfit type class but in this particular session we would be working in teams. We quickly introduce ourselves as we go around the circle giving a quick fact about us. And after a quick warm up we were put in our teams. Bree, our fab instructor kindly puts Dawn and I together. Thank god! We quickly pre-apologize to our other two team mates for any lameness that may occur on our part. It’s shot down instantly. They don’t care. They love working out and getting fit. They happily welcome any like mind people, no matter your ability. I love them right away. The workout is hard. Four stations of Box Jumps, Burpees, Lunges and 200 meter run repeated three times. It was an intense workout that I loved. Both Dawn and I felt accomplished at the end and felt like we WORKED OUT!
If I had to summarize Pink Iron it would be a community of athletes that are feminine but TOUGH. OK, I actually read that off their wall but it’s a perfect description. You are surrounded by words like believe, challenge, empower. I love this place. You will too.
