We are big fans of ILIA natural and organic cosmetics, I literally get complements every time I wear their lip colors. We asked founder Sasha Plavsic about starting her line, her favorite green beauty products and beauty tips.
What inspired you to start ILIA?
Initially ILIA started off more as a project to recreate a tinted lip balm in an organic form. Working with a chemist for the raw ingredients and finding the packaging to compliment the idea was what really drove everything forward as a point of inspiration.
What was you biggest challenge to starting your own line?
There are always challenging aspects and some days are more challenging than others. The biggest learning lesson over the last 3 years has been to remove emotion whenever possible from a problem and look for an immediate solution. There is always a solution to solving any issue and the sooner we recognize that without overreacting, the more our energy can be put to good use for the positive aspects of the business.
How do you get your color inspirations for your line?
For our core colors I usually look to what is wearable but when its comes to limited editions these are the most fun to work on as the rules can be broken and we can take risks. Color inspiration will come from my travels, or perhaps seeing a certain shade being used on the runways and then taking it to another level. Its endless and by far always exciting to see how people react to what I choose.
What are your five favorite green beauty products at the moment?
What is your go-to makeup look?
Glowing skin is base for starting anything. Using a light serum underneath our Vivid Tinted Moisturizer, followed by our Vivid Concealer to help conceal and any redness or darkness under the eyes. Then if I am choosing a bold lip I will usually just use our Nightfall Mascara and our Multi-Stick in Cheek To Cheek topped with Illuminator Polka Dots & Moonbeams.
Any tips on picking out the perfect lipstick color?
Take risks. If you aren’t used to bold colors, start somewhere in the middle and try them on whenever possible. For more fair skin tones cooler shades or coral hues tend to work well. Olive toned skin can have their pick but will fair well in warm tones most often.
