It is said that around 500 million straws are used everyday in the US, that totals up to 46,400 school buses full every year. That is an average 1.6 straws per person a day, that means each person would use 38,000 straws between the age of 5 – 65. These straws are often washed out to our water ways ending up in our oceans. In the last 25 years over 6 million straws and stir sticks were picked up during beach clean-ups. They are one of the most common trash items found in the ocean and on beaches.
Disposable plastic straws are also toxic, they can contain Phthalates and Bisphenol A, BPA linked to brain cancer, behavior problems, increased risk of cancer and health issues in younger kids. Not to mention the viral video of the sea turtle that got the straw stuck in his nose which was just heart breaking visual to see that is tough to get out of your mind.
What can we do? Cut down on your families exposure. Trying not to use straws when you are out helps, opting for using a paper straws that are biodegradable although its still a single use product nonetheless better than plastic, but the best option by far is using a reusable straw.
