I’m on a never ending quest to find the greenest and most effective products for my self and my makeup kit. I’m currently working on an eco makeup series for Pink Kale and whilst working on it I came across this amazing liquid foundation and brush by Sappho. I loved these so much I had to give them their own post before the series is done.
About the company: Sappho was founded by Emmy nominated makeup artist Joann Fowler, who has a long list of TV and Film credits. Joann was inspired by some of the actresses she worked with on set and was inspired to create a clean makeup line with full ingredient disclosure and adherence to the strictest safety measures. Amongst other things Sappho owes a big portion of its success to a wide range of makeup artists who love the line and use it on there clients. This company has some beautiful products and great standards. I also love that it was created by an on-set makeup artist, so you know the products are effective and lasting. They are also based in Vancouver which is my hometown so they get extra points for that!
Price: $52. A price comparable with other high end foundations and a little goes a long way so expect this product to last you for quite a while.
Ingredients: Aloe Barbadensis (Organic Aloe) Leaf Juice, Organic Alcohol Extracts of Aspalathus Linearis (Roobis) Leaf, Calendula Officinalis ( Organic Calendula) Flowers (and) Camellia Sinensis ( Organic Green Tea) Leaf, Simmondsia Chinensis (Organic Jojoba ) Seed oil, Titanium Dioxide, Emulsifying Wax NF, tocopherol ( Vitamin E) , Rosemary Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Azadirachta Indica ( Organic Neem) Seed Oil, Limnanthes Alba ( Meadowfoam) Seed Oil, Daucus Carota ( Carrot ) Seed Oil, Stearic Acid, Amorphophallus Konjac ( Konjac) Gum, Zinc Oxide, Cl 77492 ( Iron Oxide), Mica, Essential Oils
These all check out pretty clean their are one or two ingredients listed as a 3 on the ewg but over all a very clean ingredient list. The base of the product is organic aloe juice & jojoba oil which is nice and calming to the skin. They have used an all natural system that incorporates essential oils to preserve the product as opposed to harmful preservatives.
Packaging: The foundation comes in a 30ml glass bottle with a pump applicator. I really like that the bottle as it is glass and not plastic and the pump makes for a hygienic application, its also removable so you can reach the product when it gets to the end of the bottle.
Color selection: The color range is pretty nice they have 8 shades with pink and yellow undertones. Their is not much for deeper skin tones but they do have quite a big selection. As it is now winter I find my self using the Rachel shade and it blends in really nicely.
Coverage: Medium, build-able coverage.
Finish: I would call this a satin to matt finish, it goes on really beautifully over the skin and does not require much powder to set it.
Wear: This foundation has a nice medium coverage and feels weightless on your skin. I always hate that heavy foundation feeling you usually get from higher coverage foundations this definitely does not have that. I have pretty normal to combination skin and I find that is stays on all day if I set it with powder. If its just worn alone it lasts a little less, I would say I would need touch ups after 4 hours.
Tips: If you have oily skin primers work especially well to help the makeup stay. 100% Pure has a really great one for oily skin. I actually have a whole primer story coming out soon. You don’t need a lot of moisturizer under this product as it is pretty moisturizing on its own.
Final thoughts: Over the years I have tried so many different foundation’s and of course green products keep getting better. This liquid foundation is a really great product, it blends into the skin beautifully, gives a nice build-able coverage and has staying power. I tend to get breakouts and have sensitive skin, I have been using this foundation for a few weeks and it really works great and I’ve had no problem’s or skin issues. Its really one of the best green beauty liquid foundations I have tried so far. Oh and its vegan so that is a bonus.
Recommendations: I would feel comfortable using these foundations in my makeup kit and on set. I would recommend them to people wanting a liquid foundation with medium coverage and a satin-matt finish.
I love this foundation brush it works really well with the Sappho foundation.
How to use: You can use this to apply your whole foundation or you can just use it to buff out your foundation at the end.
Finish: This brush gives a beautiful flawless airbrushed look to the skin.
Made of: They use cruelty free bristles that are tightly packed together making it a buffer.
Thoughts: I really love this brush it applies the Sappho foundation really beautifully. I like that it does not waste a lot of products like some foundation brushes and sponges can and it helps give your foundation that flawless airbrushed look. This brush reminds me of the Artis Brushes but at a better price point.
