I hate cardio. Running on the treadmill, elliptical, whatever. I hate it. But, I love working out and I know that it is a necessary evil. I need to be tricked into getting a great cardio workout. Enter WORLD CHAMPION CARDIO BOXING, created by husband and wife, Terry and Tanya Norris. Tanya is a former athlete, current personal trainer, and all around fantastic motivator. “Terrible” Terry Norris, who runs the class, is a retired four-time light-middleweight world champion (even defeating Sugar Ray Leonard) and was an inductee into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2005. He’s the Real Deal Holyfield; or in this case Real Deal Norris. Not the same ring, but just as effective. I promise.
I have taken boxing classes in the past but experience for this class is not necessary at all. Just show up with a big bottle of water (you’ll need it.) The one hour class, or one hour experience as they call it, is ran by Terry and consists of timed rounds that include different combinations of jump rope, lunges, push ups, sit ups, burpees, squats, jump squats, mountain climbers, sprints, all combined with rounds of hitting the heavy bag and focus mitts with Terry. You do not stop moving in this class. At all. Not for a second. And per my Polar Training Computer (measures heart rate, calories and fat burned) I burned 826 calories! In one hour! The class is designed to burn 650-1200 calories. I’ve been going for a few weeks and have been consistently burning between 750 and 830. Terry is an excellent motivator; he’ll push you to push yourself. My friend that I take this class with me lost 21 pounds of baby weight in one month doing this work out.
Terry started the next class and I sat with Tanya after class. While I was “knocked out” and trying to catch my breath, she answered some questions and explained the workout in her own words.
Describe your workout:
World champion cardio boxing is it intense cardiovascular contact boxing workout. The equipment we use includes, floor bags, focus mitts, boxing gloves and hand wraps.
The workout was designed and created by former four-time world boxing champion terrible Terry Norris and celebrity fitness and lifestyle consultant Tanya E. Norris.
It is the workout Terry did while training pro back in the day. The program prepares you for the ultimate goal of going 12 full three minute rounds like a real boxer in one of our 12 round sessions. We do a lot of repetitive work for endurance, this is the only way to be able to get the 12 round session. Everyone hates the countdown from 15 of sit ups and push-ups and they try to change the sit ups but we don’t let them! Full sit-ups all the way!
What makes it unique:
Our program is unique in that it is semi private. And we work in groups of 4 to 8 clients per session. It’s Probably the only workout program in LA that you can’t show up late to… The hardest work out in LA for sure.
What is your exercise philosophy:
Positive Mental Attitude! Terry wrote this with a sharpie on the wall…way back in the day at boxing camp. If your mental attitude is positive, nothing phases you!
Who is this workout for:
This experience (as we like to call it) is for everyone. We get a lot of calls and people are intimidated at the thought of coming to one of our sessions. Once they come and experience the workout they are hooked.
What should we be getting out of the session:
You will get out of the session what you give. The harder you punch, the higher you jump the more you will get out of the workout. You’ll burn 650-1259 calories. You’ll be able to fire your therapist lol. You will feel revived and energized. Within a week or two you will feel like a new person. Mind, body, spirit & Soul!
Any crucial exercise hints to share:
Yes indeed! Not just when you’re working out with us, in all you do. Always give 150% lunge lower, squat lower, punch harder. Never do ANYTHING half ass. Do not cheat yourself. But the most important thing actually has nothing to do with exercise 80% of your end result is going to be your meal plans (we don’t like to call them diets) we recommend you plans based on the glycemic index. Maintaining normal blood sugar levels is an essential part of weight-loss, working out and overall energy throughout the day!
Tanya and Terry love what they do, and that extends into their class and their clients. I am somehow both energized and exhausted at the end of class, but am always totally motivated. It is easy to understand why they have full classes and celebrity clientele; this is a simple to follow effective workout that will make you sweat!
I signed up for 3 personal training sessions with Terry that focuses more on technique but promises to not hold out on the cardio. More to follow on that…
